24/03/2017

Dear Parents / Carers and Staff

As you know Mark Rose has been appointed as Executive Principal following the retirement of Cherie White he will start his new role at the end of March.  Bryan Webster will take on the role of Head of School for Oaklands through to August 31st 2018.

Federation News

French Trip - some of the Year 8 and above, will have the opportunity to visit France in May this year.

We are in the process of enhancing the training of our Play Therapist at Ratcliffe so that she will be able to work across the Federation in future. This is an area that we want to develop over the next few years. Mrs Chave is looking forward to the challenge ahead as she is also a class teacher.

THRIVE is also developing . Vicky Smith and Becky Tanner have both attended the additional training re adolescents and will be working with our older students. However, all staff have had training re THRIVE so we are hoping to develop the whole school approach across the Federation.

Mark Rose has been developing Phonics across the school and has recently won a bid for funding from the schools alliance. The funding will be used to develop the teaching of phonics and literacy across Oaklands, with ideas and progress being shared across the Federation.

Staffing

We are delighted to welcome Bryan Webster, our new Head of School at Oaklands.  He is a very experienced member of the Senior Leadership Team at Ratcliffe and is looking forward to leading ongoing school improvement here at Oaklands.

Following many years working at Oaklands supporting our young people and their families Melanie Anstead our Home School Liaison has left her role.  We thank her for her dediaction and welcome Mandy McVitty, as our new Home School Liaison; we wish her well as she takes on this position.  Julie Gibbons has also left her teaching role and wish her well for the future.

We also say farewell to Paula Powell, we would also like to thank her for her contribution to our school community.  Congratulations to Hannah Wilson who has been appointed as our new Speach and Language Therapy Assistant.  I am confident that she will further develop this important aspect of our curriculum.

Care Staff

As you are aware there have been major changes to the structure of the care provision. This has led to several staff being made redundant. A full list of leavers will be shared with all parents of the residential students prior to the end of the summer term.

Keeping Children Safe

Please be aware of what your child is accessing on their tablets, computers, phones or laptops. If you are worried about anything that they are accessing and want some advice, please contact Mandy McVitty who will sign post you to the appropriate support networks or indeed offer advice.

We do offer parent support groups for e-safety. Keep an eye on the diary events.

Summer Safety

Please provide sun lotion for your child in school. We will need your consent to apply it if needed. Please help your child to be 'sun savvy' and provide a cap or sun hat if the weather is hot.

Annual Reviews and EHCPs

Please be aware that when we set dates for the reviews, we can only change them for a limited period of time as there is a timeline that we need to follow in order to get the paperwork back to the 0-25 SEN team for processing. We will advise you of this if there is a need to change the dates.

Web Site

We are currently working to update our website, we appreciate your patience and welcome any feedback.

Parent Questionnaire

A parent's questionnaire will be sent out shortly for your attention. Again, your feedback would be gratefully received.

Progress to Date

The outcome of our recent evaluation visit by the Local Authority was that they were pleased with the progress we are making in the classroom and the school in general. The new assessment process and notes of progress were identified as a strength, but must be maintained by all teachers. We will continue to work on this so that we are able to show you, as parents, clear evidence of your child's progress.
